To bring more technical AI expertise into Government, Government should create specific technical roles in key departments, including the Ministry of Defence, the Information Commissioner’s Office, the Home Office and the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. These roles would be targeted at experts in AI, machine learning and cyber security, and would focus on assuring the safety and security of AI systems that are deployed in specific sectors, particularly those that serve critical functions to society (such as critical infrastructure, law enforcement, finance, and defence).
