Government should use more funding towards creating a greater capacity inside the government for establishing metrics and mechanisms to assess progress in AI, its applications and impacts on society. This could be achieved either by a new body (which could be housed within the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation or the Alan Turing Institute), or by substantially increasing the scope and funding for existing initiatives, such as CDEI’s existing AI-monitoring capacity.
